The dachshund's story starts in 15th-century Germany, where these tenacious little dogs were bred to dig badgers out of their burrows — the name literally means "badger dog." That working heritage explains almost everything you'll love about them today: the fearless attitude, the nose that follows every scent, and the determination that borders on comedy. Over the centuries they traded the hunt for the couch, becoming one of the world's most recognizable and adored companion breeds.

Care Needs
Start training and socialization early, lean on positive reinforcement, and expose your pup to plenty of people, pets, and places. Daily walks and play keep both body and mind busy — a bored dachshund invents its own entertainment, usually involving digging. Health & Lifespan
Dachshunds are a generally healthy, long-lived breed — 12 to 16 years is typical. The main thing to protect is the famous long back: keep weight healthy, discourage jumping, and use ramps where you can to reduce the risk of intervertebral disc disease (IVDD).
